Most are in the position to accompany themselves musically.<\/p>\n<p>The original troubadours were chiefly poets, but the poems they wrote were most certainly presented as songs\u2014lyrical recitations with simple unison underscoring or without accompaniment at all. This was good High Medieval living (11<sup>th<\/sup> through 13<sup>th<\/sup> centuries) and could involve travel from the South of France through the North of Italy, to Spain and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Are you intelligent, witty, quick-thinking, and musical? Do you enjoy excitement and travel? Become a troubadour! Poetry skills are the heaviest requirement. A good voice and additional instrumental skills are a plus! You\u2019ll be a welcome visitor in all cities, towns, and villages that interest you\u2026but your poetry skills must be top-notch. An amazing troubadour is not simply a singer, not merely a minstrel, nor just bordering on <em>balladeer<\/em>. A true troubadour is primarily a poet (yes, who writes verse to music\u2026but the verse is your highest gift to share!)<\/p>\n<p>My unsolicited advice to readers this month is: concentrate on poetry. Complete your trek to becoming a true troubadour!<\/p>\n<p>April is National Poetry Month: Celebrate all month long and get some welcome poetic training from the Academy of American Poets, who founded <strong>National Poetry Month<\/strong>. Lots of advice for current troubadours\u2014directly from the Academy of American Poets\u2014is shown here. Complete your journey as a true troubadour by putting poetry first! In 2008, the Academy of American Poets took the initiative to all 50 United States, encouraging individuals around the country to participate. April seemed the best time within the year to turn attention toward the art of poetry, in an ultimate effort to encourage poetry readership year-round.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the goals of National Poetry Month?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe goals of National Poetry Month are to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>highlight the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/poets.org\/poets__;!!Mih3wA!E0vcDcsYhuuEMXPOi5qDEK79r4nyjuj1RsBj2qPw1A1hyDfLKhm-FmQzdMIFtX_nDxdgrd63K7SG3fxiig$\">poets<\/a><\/li>\n<li>encourage the reading of <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/poets.org\/poems__;!!Mih3wA!E0vcDcsYhuuEMXPOi5qDEK79r4nyjuj1RsBj2qPw1A1hyDfLKhm-FmQzdMIFtX_nDxdgrd63K7Tb6R7u1w$\">poems<\/a><\/li>\n<li>assist teachers in <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/poets.org\/materials-teachers__;!!Mih3wA!E0vcDcsYhuuEMXPOi5qDEK79r4nyjuj1RsBj2qPw1A1hyDfLKhm-FmQzdMIFtX_nDxdgrd63K7R7e6u_CA$\">bringing poetry into their classrooms<\/a><\/li>\n<li>increase the attention paid to poetry by national and local media<\/li>\n<li>encourage increased publication and distribution of poetry books, and<\/li>\n<li>encourage support for poets and poetry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Shouldn&#8217;t we celebrate poetry all year round, not just in April?<\/strong><br \/>\nBy all means, yes! The Academy of American Poets encourages the year-round, lifelong reading of poetry.
