I quit.<\/p>\n

It feels weird to say and even more strange to read it back to myself, but it\u2019s true: It\u2019s time for me to go now. The how and why are irrelevant but rest assured, I\u2019ll still be around.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s do the numbers:<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been writing the Zen of Recording<\/em> <\/strong>column for just about 20 years now.
\nI have been a professional musician for over 44 years.
\nI\u2019ve been a record producer<\/strong> for over 38 years. Carlos Olmeda<\/strong> was my first client in 1986.
\nThere have been over 1400<\/strong> recording projects that bear my name as producer and recordist.
\nI stopped counting after that, which was a while ago.
\nI have released six (currently working on number seven) albums as a solo artist and three with The Wild Truth<\/strong>, in which fellow columnist Charlie Loach<\/strong> and I still rock our hearts out, on occasion.
\nI\u2019ve been married four times and none of my three sons were the product of those unions.
\nMy eldest, Drew Andrews<\/strong> is well known to many of you from his solo work, the bands Via Satellite<\/strong> and Album Leaf<\/strong> and in his current role as manager of The Whistle Stop Bar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I have reviewed hundreds of recording tools and techniques<\/strong> in these pages and did the same for SLAMM<\/strong> magazine for two years before they were sold to CityBeat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Yes, there were some awards awarded along the way, but that was never why I did it. I did it because I love songs<\/strong>. Because I believe that to share that song with others is what gives the song and\u2014arguably the writer\u2014purpose<\/em>. Because being a musical \u201cmidwife\u201d of musical creation is something I was born to do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I was mentored and supported in my production career as an 18-year-old kid by the late George Seibert<\/strong>, who blessed me with his instruction, experience, and a piece of sage advice: \u201cAlways have a co-producer. Everything\u2019s always their fault!\u201d<\/p>\n

I tried to take you out of your head to unexpected, hopefully thought-provoking places, from bodysurfing nude at<\/strong> Black\u2019s Beach<\/strong> to live recordings in churches <\/strong>to recording<\/strong> a crew of delightful Thai people partying their brains out<\/strong> in the background of a Buddy Blue<\/strong> album.<\/p>\n

I shared my victories as well as my defeats.<\/p>\n

I never tried to ever talk down to you<\/strong>. I\u2019m not better than you, I just know some stuff that might help. Don\u2019t let anybody tell you how you should be or that your music isn\u2019t relevant<\/strong>. Artists are driven to create and share their artwork. Period. I\u2019ve been driven to help you in that task these past 20 odd years and I will continue to, albeit in a different form.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll see me out more. We\u2019ll meet and collaborate. We\u2019ll share a stage. We\u2019ll make a record!
\n<\/strong>Come introduce yourself, ask me a question and we\u2019ll talk. I love to help music get made.<\/p>\n

Always remember what the great producer Phil Ramone<\/strong> once said:
\n\u201cIf it\u2019s an art, then there are no secrets!\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d like to address the people who have followed this column religiously: To both of you<\/strong>, let me say that writing this column for the San Diego Troubadour <\/strong>has been a blessing and an honor. I can somewhat selfishly say that I took this gig to become a better writer. I ended up with something more: An actual literary voice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I think I knew this day was coming when I recently wrote the story of my record-holding bicycle jump.<\/p>\n

So many of you mentioned that story and encouraged me to do more. I will.<\/p>\n

Finally, let me shine a light on the publishing team of Lyle Duplessie<\/strong>, his wife Ellen<\/strong>, Kent Johnson,<\/strong> and current editor Liz Abbott<\/strong>, who approached me at a party in 2004 offered me the opportunity to write for the San Diego Troubadour<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can write whatever<\/em> you want.\u201d said Lyle<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in.\u201d said me.<\/p>\n

In all of that time to now, I believe I only turned in my column on time on three occasions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sorry, Liz. I thought you said \u2018in\u2019 time! You\u2019ve been a goddamned hero<\/strong> to America\u2019s eighth largest city, as well as its chief source of local music news and info. You kick ass, girl!<\/p>\n

Thank you, gentle readers.<\/strong> I love San Diego music so much and I know you do, too.<\/p>\n

To everyone else, I say:<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t kowtow to those who put limits on your musical efforts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t believe the argument that our audience is \u201caging out\u201d or that your music lacks relevance. Do it anyway.<\/strong> People like you<\/strong> make the tough times more bearable and all our lives are enriched immeasurably through the exchange.<\/p>\n

I look forward to even more adventures, just different ones.<\/p>\n
