The how and why are irrelevant but rest assured, I\u2019ll still be around.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s do the numbers:<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been writing the <strong><em>Zen of Recording<\/em> <\/strong>column for just about 20 years now.<br \/>\nI have been a professional musician for over 44 years.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve been a <strong>record producer<\/strong> for over 38 years. <strong>Carlos Olmeda<\/strong> was my first client in 1986.<br \/>\nThere have been over <strong>1400<\/strong> recording projects that bear my name as producer and recordist.<br \/>\nI stopped counting after that, which was a while ago.<br \/>\nI have released six (currently working on number seven) albums as a solo artist and three with <strong>The Wild Truth<\/strong>, in which fellow columnist <strong>Charlie Loach<\/strong> and I still rock our hearts out, on occasion.<br \/>\nI\u2019ve been married four times and none of my three sons were the product of those unions.<br \/>\nMy eldest, <strong>Drew Andrews<\/strong> is well known to many of you from his solo work, the bands <strong>Via Satellite<\/strong> and <strong>Album Leaf<\/strong> and in his current role as manager of <strong>The Whistle Stop Bar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-images\">\n<div id=\"attachment_25589\" style=\"width: 910px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25589\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25589\" src=\"https:\/\/sandiegotroubadour.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image0.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sandiegotroubadour.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image0.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/sandiegotroubadour.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image0-160x160.jpeg 160w, https:\/\/sandiegotroubadour.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image0-240x240.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/sandiegotroubadour.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image0-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/sandiegotroubadour.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image0-768x768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/sandiegotroubadour.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/image0-80x80.jpeg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Gleason<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I have reviewed <strong>hundreds of recording tools and techniques<\/strong> in these pages and did the same for <strong>SLAMM<\/strong> magazine for two years before they were sold to <strong>CityBeat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there were some awards awarded along the way, but that was never why I did it. I did it because I love <strong>songs<\/strong>. Because I believe that to share that song with others is what gives the song and\u2014arguably the writer\u2014<em>purpose<\/em>. Because being a musical \u201cmidwife\u201d of musical creation is <strong>something I was born to do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I was mentored and supported in my production career as an 18-year-old kid by the late <strong>George Seibert<\/strong>, who blessed me with his instruction, experience, and a piece of sage advice: \u201cAlways have a co-producer. I\u2019m not better than you, I just know some stuff that might help. <strong>Don\u2019t let anybody tell you how you should be or that your music isn\u2019t relevant<\/strong>. Artists are driven to create and share their artwork. Period. I\u2019ve been driven to help you in that task these past 20 odd years and I will continue to, albeit in a different form.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll see me out more. We\u2019ll meet and collaborate. We\u2019ll share a stage. <strong>We\u2019ll make a record!<br \/>\n<\/strong>Come introduce yourself, ask me a question and we\u2019ll talk. I love to help music get made.<\/p>\n<p>Always remember what the great producer <strong>Phil Ramone<\/strong> once said:<br \/>\n\u201cIf it\u2019s an art, then there are no secrets!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d like to address the people who have followed this column religiously: <strong>To both of you<\/strong>, let me say that writing this column for the <strong>San Diego Troubadour <\/strong>has been a blessing and an honor. I can somewhat selfishly say that I took this gig to become a better writer. I ended up with something more: <strong>An actual literary voice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I think I knew this day was coming when I recently wrote the story of my record-holding bicycle jump.<\/p>\n<p>So many of you mentioned that story and encouraged me to do more. I thought you said \u2018in\u2019 time! You\u2019ve been a goddamned <strong>hero<\/strong> to America\u2019s eighth largest city, as well as its chief source of local music news and info.
